HEAT was such a sobering and ominous look at this subject. It left me full of anxiety about whether Americans and others across the globe can look beyond their own immediate comforts and economics to do the right thing for our planet and for the millions of other people that share this planet. The ethanol controversy is a prime example. Corn based ethanol benefits farmers and the state of Iowa. That is wonderful for Iowa, but not good for the planet. The preponderance of evidence so far suggests that using cropland to grow fuel has a domino effect that causes food prices to rise and rainforests(carbon dioxide sinks) to be cut down to provide more farmland. So more people can't afford food and we actually exacerbate the problem of global warming by cutting down rain forests. But this argument is a tough sell to well-meaning Iowans and people in other farm states, because it affects our pocket books. We don't want to hear the problems with biofuels. This type of very local concern may prevent politicians from taking the critical actions we need to avert the worst of the climate change catastrophe. It makes me want to bury my head in the sand too.
Thanks for your comment. I think you're in good company feeling scared about how big the global problems are. And Iowans are not any different from any other community group that puts survival (of our "own") first. I'm glad you poked your head out of the sand long enough to post here!
